I have just spent the best half hour of my torrid Summer watching this gem of a program. Who would think that Vicars would make such good joke tellers ? Well I guess they are good public speakers as it is their job, and the fact they have seen all life and still retain a level of warmth about the human condition probably helps too. Not such a surprise after all when you really think about it....

The Return

Well ive just come back off holiday this weekend, and this is usually the week I go away and return to find Summer dying, fading and receding. Despite holidaying a week earlier Summer is still fading today on my return. Its overcast, cool and windy. A touch of Autumn is in the air and the leaves on the tree's are looking pale and dry.
 Im still acclimatising after a first family holiday with my wife and daughter. God, children can be demanding, but looking at my daughters gene pool that's no surprise, and I only have myself to blame....For the last couple of years ive been to The Western Isles of Scotland with other relations, mainly men so this time my holiday has been of quite a different kind to put it mildly ! One thing is for sure though, I valued my solitude when I managed to get some !!!

It begs the question...

What kind of twat buys LED Candles ?  Why probably the same kind of twat that reads a novel on a Kindle....

 

The not so Social Network

I'll be honest, Ive never really understood the idea of facebook, well I understand the idea, its just how far short its users fall in utilising its full potential. People are far too insular on there. I only have one friend ( who is going through a crisis ) who makes any kind of human input into his status updates. He gets criticised for it, he's told its not appropriate...   Life would be so much better if more people shared their experiences, especially in a crisis as I expect someone else will often be reading who has, had or is soon to experience something similar. Maybe less people would be on medication for mental problems if they shared their thoughts and feelings a little more often on line.
  The next generation are awful on there. Its all vain profile photo's and 50+ likes chasing. Im sick of it and may block anyone under 16 soon as they are highly stupid and annoying. Maybe Im getting older ?

Brave New World

It seems today that to smack a child is illegal. It seems to me also useless nowadays to shout at a child. I told my 2 year old off yesterday and she shouted back at me to " Stop shouting at me Daddy ! " She is only two, but she already sees herself as an equal. That was not so in my childhood, no, not at all. I didn't shout in defiance at my parents when I was two, if I did I was told off and went to bed, period. In her first two years somewhere and somehow she has learnt to intelligently defy and challenge me. This isn't a silly fit or wobbly she throws, its a definite mind set she has learnt, an arrogance I didn't think id see for several years yet.

We live in an age where excellence is expected in everything we do. Never has there been a time when " just good enough " is all thats needed...

Who is more dangerous ?  A person on anti-depressants or a drunk driver ?   

Should they be allowed to adopt ?
Should they be allowed to divorce ?
Should they be allowed to drive a vehicle or raise children even ?
Sorry......

Is the tide turning ?

As many teenagers are waiting for their exam results a certain teacher is making headlines in the newspapers by suggesting that... exams are only one way of measuring intelligence and in no way do they reflect whether the person is trustworthy, reliable or an asset in the work place. Neither will an exam tell you what a persons characteristics are that make them useful or a pleasure to have around . She also goes on to say that in 5 years time all the " who ha " of these exams will be forgotten in the takers lives as work/family will be the new future priority...

I find this view remarkably refreshing, especially from a teacher, though I am surprised she hasn't been shouted down in our education obsessed society. Education is good , but not the be all and end all as its been ramped up to be. Now that's when it all gets a bit silly...

STONEWALL

I have never really seen the point of gay pressure groups like STONEWALL . Who cares if someone is gay nowadays ? I have a gay relative, so what ? Such groups just stir up trouble. Take for instance the recent gay marriage coup !
  Today though they have out done themselves by going to a more extreme level ( all pressure groups must eventually ) by suggesting that primary school children should be taught about gay lifestyles !!! The spokesman for STONEWALL has now lost any good will the general public so generously afforded him. Yes, we are quite liberal in Britain, but don't push it ! You can mess with, and outrage all sorts of institutions with your alternative lifestyle ideas, but don't mess with the mainstreams children, the damnation of public opinion  will fall  upon you no less ! Of course he wants us all to be homophobic, his life would be very dull without it...

Today has ended better than it began....

More human than human

How vain are the next generation ? Well judging by Face Book, very. Everybody wants to look like a model. The profile photo is no longer a quick snap shot holding a phone up to a mirror, in fact Ive seen some that are clearly the work of a professional photographer. Now these are in the minority at the moment, but you can see the way the future is going. Appearance seems to be a young woman's priority,and I don't know where that leaves equality...
   This obvious beauty is becoming ugly as the pressure and desperation that I know lurk below are exposed. Worst of all is the fact that they dress to impress men, not boys their own age. They cant wait to become a woman. As I said I'm not sure this tallies up with the whole sexual equality and gender stereotypes arguments. Maybe they are resorting to type, maybe they are responding to a greater pressure of male expectation. What ever it is I hope my daughter will not be drawn into it, but I hold no hope in that department. The seeds are sown.
