No , no , no !

There is an increasingly irritating verbal craze for saying certain key words at the end of a sentence twice . These includes Yes ... which becomes yes , yes . Also ive heard " no " being used twice at the end of sentences also today . Worse though is the word " good " becoming " good , good "  Whats going on ? The news reader has just said the word future three times in succession at the end of his sentence just know . I don't get it ? Is everyone retarded . This silly craze is going to get worse before it gets better ...

Ive got to ask myself.....

Are some religious preachy blogs spewing out posts on an automatic cycle ? Some I see no human presence in some .

Is it worth the cost ?

It struck me recently how much emotional " investment " we put into other people .Years of time are spent cultivating long term friends and then through no fault of our own these investments are wiped out to nothing . People move house . People get married and insulate themselves . People suddenly reveal their true colours . Sometimes life just fades them out of your sphere . Ive experienced most of those .  Each loss is a heavy one Trust is essential . There really is no given rule to test if your backing a " dud " .

Looking back....

I have recently been accused of being a little to obsessed with my blogging . Apparently
 " You re  face is never out of that lap top " . Looking back I remember why I first started writing . Yes it was a coping mechanism and it still is today despite situations eventually changing . I see no harm in daily writing , in fact life without it would be less pleasurable .
    Trawling back through my past posts I see  have been or appeared to have been very angry !  " It must be so tiring being so angry at everything ? "   Well not really as I was blowing off steam about subjects that were at the time quite important in the news to me and at the time this kept my mind off other problems I couldn't face   . Also I had things going on in my life meaning I was more hyped than  I might have otherwise been . This maybe exaggerated my mouth offs looking back or maybe not . Besides it doesn't really matter as once again I can look back and say that isn't quite me anymore .
     Its funny because for the second time after discovering an interesting person I find myself saying that the person I was is not the person I am today . Where and when those dividing lines occurred Im afraid I cant decide . The answers wont be on this blog though as I notice us bloggers can rattle on for years without saying the one thing that hinges all our entries  ( and it is years ) together . That's the part of us we can never publish , though many will read between the lines . Maybe even others have us better sussed than we know ourselves . A scary thought ? We shall never know.....

     And as for my Golden blog , well that's all very subjective so that's as real as it ever was !!! Yes I did that on purpose because that very fact sums up why I write it . Dont get it ? Well you re best off sticking to Driftingsideways then ...   

P.S   I wrote this post this morning with my own circumstances very much in mind . It sounds like Im  tarring the rest of the blog scene with the same brush as me , that isn't right ! I apologise if anyone took offence . I'm just musing about my own personal history today looking back over it all ...

Vouchers

Today I had a new experience . I actually saved money using a voucher . The price on the voucher was the price I paid . No hidden add ons . No hidden extras . This has never happened to me before and I always pour scorn on people telling me their voucher savings , but today Ive got to admit that bargains do genuinely exist . Where did this miracle take place ? Mc donalds  !!!   This challenges the perception further and I'm digging no deeper...

I think this Insidious brand is the scariest horror film Ive seen since I saw the original Hellraiser film  years ago. Its a long while since Ive felt that slight panic at whats on the screen . The best thing is ( unusually for a modern film ) that this is not caused by visual gross out gore or much too realistic human suffering . The images of horror are unique . A quality job , but if I like a film it normally crashes at the box office...

My hopes and fears for the weekend ( sarcasm )

My laptop is doing everything twice . In life I end up doing everything twice ! Its a very bleached out sunny day . Its unseasonably warm to but cools off nicely at night . The tree's are beginning to turn . I hate days when the sun is this penetrating . Usually this happens in May . The light is harsh and uncompromising . Its always affected me negatively and gives me a nervous outlook . Sounds carry differently in the dale during long dry spells . This adds to the uneasiness .... I am planning to go to watch Insidious 2 at the cinema tonight whether I can find anyone who can or is willing to go is quite another question.

As simple as 1, 2 , 3 ?

Today we were selling some sheep at the auction mart again  , and to decide who's are going to be sold first it is normal for a lot to be drawn from a bag containing all the sheep pen numbers  . Today funnily number 1 was drawn . Well I laughed to myself ( as any number could have been drawn )  it seemed a good a place to start as any  . We were in pen 4 .
 Well the first annoying thing was they started at pen 2 ! Why ?  Oh well only 2 and 3 to go then so no long wait ? No not so .   2  and  3 were sold then our pen number 4 was skipped over and selling re-started god knows where out of site .  I mean how hard can it be ? Somehow 1 became 2 and 4 became ,  well who knows . Is nothing simple any more ? 
  Incidents like this annoy , baffle , exhilarate and make me laugh all at the same time .

Why oh why are people so obsessed with chilli's ? !    When buying food I am actively having to seek out variants that are not a " spicy hot option " .  Whats happened to the normal flavours ?  Even fish fillets are covered in chilli peppers . Once you had to seek out these " hot " options , now you can hardly escape them . This obsession with " spicy " flavour must stop . Maybe the quality of our food has gone down and is being " spiced up " ( sorry ! ) with hot options . Maybe....

I cant express how sick to my back teeth I am of TV soaps . Their screaming ,arguing , fighting , aggressive , shallow , inbred , vicious , nasty , noisy , violent , mentally unsettling plot lines . The very sound of them while I'm sat through in the kitchen feels like a slap in the face and just as aggressive .

Damned lies and statistics

Good news ,  apparently inflation is falling " putting more money in consumers pockets " . Errr no !   Inflation is seen to " fall " when the rate at which the price rise  for goods goes up more slowly , they are still going up , just not as fast as they have been  . Prices are not going down then . So how does that put more money in our pockets  ? A PRICE fall is what we want to see.....

Having paid our electric bill I noticed our letter code was DONROB  !!!     ie: Done /rob ....... an accurate description in my book .

In / Out

It amuses me to see my writing style is affected by what im reading . When I was heavily into Dion Fortune my sentences were very long and drawn out . When Im reading Aleister  Crowley my sentences become contorted and more contradicting and complex .  Other blogs I read affect my writing style too . Sometimes producing short fact based sentences , sometimes adding a smooth rhythm or a little sophistication to what Ive written . We pick up what we've read subconsciously and reproduce it in our own writing style .
  I remember seeing on the news  the results of an MRI scan of people who had been given classic novels to read . New areas of thier brains were light up suggesting new activity and thought . This doesn't surprise me after what ive just written . Of course there will be deeper repercussions from reading the classics , but thats a darker territory

Unfortunately common

Several people that ive spoken to have annoyed me recently with their inability to look beyond their original  one dimensional casual view point .

1) I was chatting to a woman who farms near us at a annual lamb sale . Due to the requirements and expectations of this " top end " sale much preparation and work is put into making the animals look right . I said I had little enthusiasm for this part of farming due to its silly fashion / appearance  based messing around . I saw it as wasted time and for visual purposes only and my time would be better spent doing something more productive . She looked shocked and started to ask me if I had " enthusiasm " for the rest of my job , listing several areas . I despaired . She equated what I said about one aspect of the farming year and applied it to the entire farm . How stupid ! People can only deal with one idea then apply it to everything . They have no sense of relativity at all . One dimensional .
     
2) Another day I was talking to a farmer I bought a car off who I bump into every now and again . He said his father had seen me recently when I was selling cattle at the mart . He then went on to say three times that  he thought by his fathers description that it must have been me . Three times he said " by my fathers description of you I thought it must be you " . This is nothing new . People only remember one physical feature about you . If your tall , fat . thin , ect or have a distinctive feature  ( cue high school paranoia  creeping up again )   . People see you as one dimensional and there is NOTHING  you can do about it ! Only the long passage of time can if you are lucky change this !

This is starting to bug me....

The mundane

Today its pouring wet . Tomorrow is the annual big two day sale of mule lambs at Hawes . This marks a punctuation in the farming year and comes round every year . Cue wind and rain usually . Im thinking about what buildings need fixing for winter . The pouring rain focuses my mind on this .

Anyone who knows me will be aware of my Ribena addiction , in fact some of you have been on the sharp end of my temper if I don't get my daily drink . In fact I get similar symptoms to a smoker deprived of cigarettes ; generally irritable .
   Well my favourite drink is made from black currents which due to mild winters ( usually ) are not producing an adequate harvest nowadays , hence Ribena's diversion into strawberry flavour . Urrrgh ! ( no I haven't tried it ! ) But don't worry help is on the horizon as a new variety of blackcurrent has been bred 95212  . Lets hope its a success in the future or some of you are gonna have a hard time of it !!!

A national problem

How much energy does it take to cook a potato ?  Answer a lot . I have never seen a food that takes so much heat to cook properly . Nationally it must drain the electric grid and when multiplied by millions of potatoes I bet a whole coal burning power station could be devoted to cooking these infernal things.....

The Olde Grey Town

I have just returned home Kendal . Whats going on ?  Vacant shop fronts  , glorified pawning shops , bargain booze off licences , charity shops and gambling establishments . These are the new faces of our high street and this is in one of the top rated places to live in England . People really are skint . Our government has started talking up a recovery despite the truth " on the ground " . There is no recovery and never will be unless the person on the street has some disposable  income and there doesn't look to be much of that around , even in  " The Lakes "

The big question

Has the human being stopped evolving ? An evocative question raised by our resident naturalist of 60 years Sir David Attenborough . His thinking behind this is natural selection is no longer applicable to human beings . If a weak child is born modern medicine kicks in with incubators and defibrillators . 95 % of new borns now survive hence the weakest are passing on genes that should not be passed on . I suppose fertility treatments are to be included in this argument . I don't say this lightly either before someone puts the boot into me as my daughters birth was not exactly probable without a little help ....Darwin himself lost a child and wrestled with whether that was the design of natural selection or the will of God . Its an interesting question.....

I have a cold and a temperature I think . I need a hair cut as well . Feeling crap so no writing tonight . This probably means i'll write all night !!! When I feel more like it I must write that piece about the haunted manor next door .

It wasn't long ago I was sat bored at night during the summer . Now I'm reading or blogging and I don't seem to have a spare moment . This is good . I think this blog has a changed look at the moment ; lighter although Golden has got deeper and may go even more personal as I have stuff to shed from my mind .

Yesterday a renown blackberry picker in our family was doing her thing . As its been a long hot summer the crop of blackberry's in the hedgerows has been very good this year . Biting into a few the sudden unique wild flavour brought back so many memories of yester year . Memories of past Harvest Festivals at our Methodist ( no longer in action ) chapel , memories of my Gran ( also no longer with us ) organising us to learn by heart  a poem for our Sunday School Anniversary . The poems were written on the back of old wall paper so we didn't wreck them I suppose , also I guess she was more than a bit thrifty !!! I can still feel the texture of that patterned paper between my fingers .....

Insidious !

I watched a fantastic modern horror film last night called Insidious  . It was not a American teenage type movie with impossibly attractive females running around . It was scary and original . I missed some of the film but what I gathered was a couple had an unconscious child who's soul was stuck in the Outer planes  and said father was helped by a medium to make an astral projection of  himself to rescue his offspring from a demon in another dark dimension . It was scary  , it was well paced and original . Loved it !

Today it finally happened . Its taken 7 years of watching and waiting , just anticipating ! Yes I can announce I finally heard a nieghbour swear and curse profoundly on our row of houses . Ive always thought I cant be the only one who blows thier top on our street . But when did people do it ? Id heard not an angry word until tonight . Well there is plenty of shouting in our house having a toddler with tantrums . Its nice to see Im not the only one to loose my cool . Wahey !!!

There are two things government should and never will fuck with as they are finding out . First is Social Security . Second is Law , and trying to make it cheaper and accessible . Both these houses are ancient and established and will be the graveyard of many a politician .
   Of course both urgently need reform but political suicide will be the result

Today has been the first proper day of Autumn . Cue wind and rain . Cue irate  locals driving in a rush up and down the narrow lanes . Everyone seems to be in a rush as though time is running out . The same thing happens a Christmas but more so .

The curse of TV

I maybe what you might call at times an emotional person judging by my blog but there are instances in which I despair of that scene . This is  when the TV programs I watch try to play this game but in an incredibly crass manor . For example ; Ive watched a show that does surprise car customisations . A relative ( usually a parent ) arranges for a car to be customised as a pleasant surprise for their son or daughter or maybe their other half . This was very entertaining until it seems one essential trait was necessary to be eligible for this show ; the recipient had to have a  disease / a crisis or disability . Cue lots of crying / whimsical music and pained facial expressions . Excuse me this is a car customisation show not a  " children's hospital show "   ( now that's a rant for another post .... )  Stick to the script .
  Undercover Boss ( the clue is in the title ) plays the same game . The undercover boss in the process of working menialy in their own company eventualy always comes across a " saint " who works hard but yes you've guessed it , has had a hard life .  Cue tears and pained looks ect again  .I don't care . Im watching to see how the company is working and  what the boss  like / dislikes about it . I don't care about its employees problems . Im not watching this show for its tears . Im trying to relax .

I have just watched the most amazing program on clockwork life like models from the  1700's  . A child like manikin that could write and a moving swan made of silver . Some machinists even studied human body parts to find the most life like method to mimic how we move . Incredible . What you have to remember is some of these machines are over 200 years old . Today thanks to micro-chips and circuit boards we take such movement for granted .......

School days

Funnily enough Im looking back to my old school days tonight after reading in our local paper  a man has been arrested for carrying a carving knife and threatening people with it . He apparently has some psychological  problems and has been spared jail as he is vulnerable so it reads . He stated in his defence he suffered from low self esteem . A bad night out and the wrong thing said by a stranger flipped him out resulting in him waving his kitchen knife around . Sounds like a nutter then ? Well he was one of my best friends at school . He was one of my very few friends at school  . He was in the uncool gang !
  Its amazing how long mental  damage done at school by a few idiots lasts ; decades . He is obviously still suffering . My last 5 years has all been about re-living what I though were my inadequacy's by constantly seeking approval in whatever part of my life I though was lacking back then . I am only now beginning to feel some closure here .
 But life does change , and its true ; school bullies do grow up to be losers !  In real life they aren't so big at all , in fact they aren't up to life and you even have to feel a bit sorry for them ....  If bullying was stamped out at school then imagine the future suffering that could be avoided ....

Yet again

Why do I never learn ? If an item is too cheap on ebay , especially car parts it probably means it wont fit . Yet again I have fallen into that trap and now have the inconvenience of returning the said goods . Our local post office is only operating 2 days a week making even posting the parcel back awkward . As Kendal is a forty mile round trip trying to save time using ebay seemed a no brainer but now I shall have to travel there anyway and waste time posting the return sometime that will probably not be convenient at all . I never learn ....

A womans mind ? All in the best possible taste.... LOL

Quite contented

 Feeling quite peaceful tonight . I like to know where I stand on life . I like to know the lie of the land . If I can grasp the mood of my current situation I can work with it . Not knowing drives me mad ..... I know what season is coming . I know the days will shorten . I know much intrigue is ahead . Life is gonna be far from dull . Stick around ......

Last winter I bought some sweat-shirts ( what a horrible word but i know no other ) from M&S   . They were size large . In the spring I bought another . Same design / size / colour only to find it no longer fitted . But why ? They both appeared identical but when laid side by side ( imagine a man doing this ! ) I discovered the new large was smaller than the original and had a different logo on the lable  inside .
 The same goes for M&S jeans . They are good quality and they fit the best of any , but again identical sizes were not identical . Yes I laid them side by side again ... Now this may not sound important but its bloody critical when you have real trouble finding clothes that fit you . In fact its enough to make you give up . Things that appear to be the same thing again are not always . If something is not consistent then its worth NOTHING !

September

Its a cold , windy overcast day today . The first day of September . Its dry though and on the farm we are gathering in the last of the years grass for the coming winter feed . Its been the best summers weather we've had following 18 months of weather so wet that the land and animals , especially the sheep were approaching a halt due to water logged fields , poor winter feed and parasites that thrived in the wet climate . A perfect storm really . Some people were looking at bankruptcy in less fertile areas than we are in . A good summer may have saved them and not just financially either as the constant stream of unsolvable problems this awful period of weather manifested took a toll on us all .
  The trouble with farming is if you fail to see a problem coming soon enough the results can be disastrous . If an animal looses weight due to not getting enough feed shortly before it gives birth it can never regain that weight before it gives birth . Both sheep and lambs can die . When this situation is caused by a spell of unprecedented weather which nothing can be done about then its very stressful . But unpredictable circumstances are the norm . Weather , government policy changes , environmental fashion changes and new diseases are all in the mix . No two years are the same...,.
 People in the dale are taking advantage of this spell of dry weather . Builders are working later for example on roofs as the wet season of Autumn could start any time, then such dry weather jobs may never get done till next spring . The trees have not begun to turn yet and the fields are still green and the grass still growing . This will help as we will be short of winter feed due to the late spring following that awful wet winter and previous summer . The cattle will stay out till november if it remains dry . This should help winter food stocks last a bit longer .
